Protect Your Walls from Stain with This Tips
Imagine your cute 4 years old just drew a beautiful mural with her brand new crayon all over her bedroom wall. Or the mud that your partner smudged in his way to the shower, after working in the yard. With regular paint, it will be extremely hard to wipe off those stains. But it won’t be a problem if you use stain-resistant paint. It allows you to wipe away stains and keep the walls looking clean.
You might wonder what causes paint to stain? We’ve asked our house painters Melbourne, and they told us that there are several reasons a paint might stain:
- The wall is painted in a low-sheen paint, like matte or flat.
- The paint is on a porous surface, like wood.
- The paint was applied without a primer.
After looking at those causes, we’ve concluded the easiest way to stop stains is to prevent them. So, we recommend you to prime before painting. If you don’t want to do the extra work, you can use a paint with a built-in primer. Both of these two options not only will prevent stains but also allow your paint to adhere better to the wall, door, or cabinet you’re painting.
Another factor at play here is sheen, or how much paint reflects light. Paints with higher sheen level are more durable compared to lower sheen ones. eggshell, semi-gloss, and high gloss, resist stains finished are the example of higher sheen paint. They are way easier to clean than matte or flat paints. But high gloss paint won’t look nice on walls because it reflects the maximum amount of light and will show every imperfection. Instead, use it on trim, cabinets, and wood will offer the highest protection.
When choosing the right stain-resistant paint, you have to consider whether you’re covering existing stains or not. High-performance primer will give you the best result if you’re covering existing stains. Choose the one that purposely made to hide previous paint colors, block stains, seal porous surfaces and promote adhesion. To gain the maximum durability, use one coat of primer and two coats of paint.
If you don’t have stains and just want a fresh wall color, you can choose a paint with a built-in primer or one geared toward stain resistance. These will keep your walls looking clean and help you keep a freshly painted look – through all of life’s little (and big) messes.
